First day of the new school year

Well, today is day 1 of our new school year - we were originally planning on starting yesterday, but, since I was working yesterday we decided to wait until today to start.  And what a way to start the morning .... I made us some hot cornmeal cereal - we haven't had that in ages & it tasted sooooooooooo good.  To go with our hot breakfast, I made a pot of coffee in my pyrex percolator coffee pot (if you've never used one of them before, I highly recommend that you give it a try - they make the best coffee).

Today has gone so smoothly - the kids ate their breakfast, went and did their morning routines and then got started with their schoolwork.  They even practiced their instruments ... Charlotte is continuing with the piano and Josh is learning how to play the accordion - it was so wonderful hearing all the music in our house this afternoon (they were practicing in separate rooms).  Josh hasn't really shown any desire to learn a musical instrument before, but, he seems to be enjoying the accordion.  ˚Ü˚

For science, for Josh, this year we got him something that is totally different than anything that he's done in the past ..... we got him the Power House Experiment Kit - it teaches about solar power/wind power/getting power from plants/etc.  He's currently working through some of the experiments before he can build the house - and yep, so far he's loving this science program.

Charlotte has been loving the Little House on The Prairie books (and TV show, which we have on DVD) - so, to go along with that we decided to have her work through the Prairie Primer .... one thing that I love about that book, is, we can make the lessons as challenging as we need for her.  If she enjoys this program as much as I think she will, maybe we'll get the curriculum based on Anne of Green Gables for next year.  ˚Ü˚
